Not illustrated. 1888 Excerpt: ...the use of rubber stoppers in the bottles holding such solutions. Pure rubber (Pard gum) would not be affected by any ordinary alkaline solution; but the ordinary rubber stopper is vulcanized, that is it is treated with sulphur to keep it from getting hard and brittle. This sulphur is not very strongly combined with the gum, and is ready to combine with alkalies when brought into contact with it. The consequence is that alkaline developers will dissolve the sulphur from contact with rubber stoppers and the solution will contain an alkaline sulphide, the presence of which would blacken any gelatino-bromide plate, even when unexposed. Therefore we recommend our readers not to use rubber stoppers in bottles holding alkaline developers. The Photographic Society of Philadelphia have recently had an excursion of its members into the Catskills. The idea is a good one and our New York Society of Amateur Photographers should get up something of a like nature. How would a canal-boat trip meet the ideas of members of the society. A voyage of a couple of days through one of the canals running out of New York would be very delightful and afford much food for cameras and dry plates. Professor Coleman Sellers, whose many contributions to our pages have made him a familiar author to our readers, has recently had a well-deserved honor conferred upon him, he has been made a Doctor of Engineering (E. D.) by the trustees of Stevens Institute. He will also be a professor in the same institution.
